London's fence rules, in plain language
London's Fence By-law (PS-6) sets the rules for residential fences. These are the ones that come up most often on our jobs:

What this means for you: our standard 6 ft fences are well within the limit. Premium lattice-top fences come to about 7 ft, right at the limit, so we set post heights carefully, especially on uneven ground where the measurement starts from the highest point.

Choosing a fence for a London lot
A few things we talk through with London homeowners at the site visit:
- Close neighbours: on tighter subdivision lots, board-on-board or privacy gives full screening. Shadowbox is a good compromise when you share the cost.
- Corner lots: the side facing the street usually has to step down to 3 ft near the corner. We plan the layout around the sight triangle.
- Driveways: the fence beside a driveway drops to 3 ft near the sidewalk so drivers can see out.
- Clay soil: much of the London area has heavy soil that holds water and heaves in winter. Posts set 4 ft deep in concrete are how we deal with it.

How tall can a fence be in London, Ontario?
The City of London Fence By-law (PS-6) allows residential fences up to 2.13 m (7 ft) in any yard. Height is measured from the highest ground within 1 m of the post to the top of the fence or posts, so post caps count.
Can I put a fence near my driveway or on a corner lot?
Yes, but inside the sight triangles it can be no taller than 0.9 m (3 ft). On a corner lot, that triangle runs 5.4 m along each street line from the corner. Beside a driveway, it runs 2.7 m along the driveway and the street line or sidewalk.
Does my neighbour have to pay for half the fence?
In London, the Line Fences Act doesn’t apply. Instead, the Fence By-law says neighbours share a boundary fence in a “just proportion.” If you can’t agree on the type of fence, a neighbour only has to contribute toward a 4 ft chain link fence. Talk it over before you build.
Do you need a permit for a backyard fence in London?
A regular backyard fence has to meet the Fence By-law’s height and location rules. Pool enclosures are regulated separately by the City. If there’s a pool involved, tell us and we’ll build to those requirements.
