Shadowbox (good-neighbour) fence

How it's built

Boards are fastened to alternate sides of the rails, overlapping slightly. From straight on you can’t see through; from an angle you see a little light and air.

Best for

Shared property lines, and yards where you want privacy without a solid wall.

Advantages

  • Looks finished from both yards, so neighbours are happy
  • Lets wind through, so it stands up well in gusts
  • Our most affordable wood style

Upgrades

Standard adds a top rail and cap board and thicker boards. Premium adds a framed lattice top.

How it's built

Two layers of boards on the same side of the rails. The second layer covers the gaps in the first, framed with a cap board on top.

Best for

Close neighbours, pools and hot tubs, and anyone who wants zero gaps.

Advantages

  • No see-through at any angle, even after the wood shrinks
  • Heavier and more solid than standard privacy
  • Good sound and wind block

How it's built

Boards run sideways between the posts. Every 8 ft section gets a centre support so the boards don’t sag over time.

Modern homes, front-facing side yards and patios.

Upgrades

Standard tightens the boards and adds a cap. Premium alternates boards so it looks good from both sides and adds a lattice top.

Lattice-top fence

A lattice top is a framed band of lattice about 1 ft tall across the top of the fence. It adds height and privacy while still letting light through, and it softens the look of a solid fence. It comes with every Premium package: shadowbox, privacy and horizontal.

A lattice top brings a fence to about 7 ft. That's right at London's 7 ft limit, measured to the top of the fence or posts, so we set post heights carefully and confirm the height for your lot on site.

Picket and spaced-board fences

Picket and spaced-board fences are shorter and more open. They're usually used for front yards and gardens, where many towns limit fence height. We quote these on request rather than through the calculator. Tell us what you have in mind.
